- 1976 – 2011 USGS Senior Research Geologist for Aggregate Resources
  Conducted research on geologic issues related to the location, identification, characterization, extraction and processing of aggregate (sand, gravel, and stone) resources, and the reclamation of mined out areas.
- 2002 – 2011 Senior Research Geologist for Geology of Industrial Minerals
  Identified national needs related to industrial minerals and conducted research necessary to address those needs.
- 1996 – 2001 Senior Research Geologist, Front Range Infrastructure Resources Project
  Conducted research on the location and characteristics of aggregate, energy, land, and water resources that are vital to sustaining the Colorado Front Range area and its infrastructure, and provided decision makers and the public with objective information about those resources in user-friendly formats.
- 1993 – 1996 Senior Research Geologist, Missouri River Basin Project
  In collaboration with 10 State Geological Surveys, prepared a geologic map and identified regional earth-science issues within the Missouri River basin, identified methods and established priorities to address those issues.
- 1981 – 1993 Research Geologist / Hydrologist
  Conducted research and wrote initiatives and other documents addressing environmental geology, infrastructure, urban geology, and nuclear waste disposal.
- 1978 – 1981 Geologist, Office of Land Information and Analysis
  Coordinated interdisciplinary studies aimed at applying earth-science information to land-use problems, and conveying this information to users.
- 1971 – 1978 Geologist
  Conducted surficial geologic mapping in Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Virginia. Prepared geologic maps, engineering geology reports, and derivative maps, and conducted outreach activities for Connecticut Valley and Fairfax County, Virginia, Urban Studies.
